From The Beach: Sean Poynter Takes On The 2010 Ventura Paddle Surfing Championships

So this past weekend the 2010 Ventura Paddle Surfing Championships went down at the prestigious C-Street point. The conditions were quite stellar. Well aside from the sunless and somewhat rainy two days, the ocean offered up some clean lines in the 3-5ft range with water temperatures that made wearing a full suit seem unnecessary.

The event served as the wave ski national championships as well as a very prestigious SUP wave competition. The talent pool in both wave ski and SUP was ridiculous, great surfing from everyone.

The Starboard team was up there representing big time, Dan Gavere, Zane Schweitzer, Eric “Disco” Disque (who was holdin down the booth), and myself, were all in attendance, leading the youthful charge. We all had a great time, surfing, and even gettin on the mic to give a bit added amusement to attendees. Zane and I were putting the mic work to the test, it was fun. A lot of people were lovin the duo, so much in fact that event organizers want to book us for other upcoming events, psyched.

But the commentating only served as entertainment for so long and then it was back to the water. And back to the water it was, several times I’d say, as the Open Division consisted of 5 rounds and the Senior Age Division consisted of 3 rounds. So to say the least, competitors were surfing a good amount of heats.

During the Open final there was some great surfing going on. As a spectator commented afterwards, “It was like a boxing match, blow by blow to blow”. So it must have been a good one to watch. I ended up finding my rhythm late in the heat which didn’t give me much time to deliver the bone-crushing blows that would have delivered the KO, but nonetheless, it was enjoyed. Congrats to all the finalist.

Thanks a lot to Brian Kuszmar for putting it on, Warren “WARDOG” Thomas at Surfing Sports, free surfers for respecting the competition zones, and everyone else who was involved in making the event happen. The surfers as well, great job.

Until next time…

Sean
