Choosing your paddle grip with Starboard SUP Team Rider – Bart De Zwart

This video features Starboard SUP Team Rider Bart De Zwart showing how to hold your paddle and the different grips.

Firstly, always hold the paddle at a 90 degree angle with both arms. If you hold the paddle with a wider grip it will require more strength when paddling and put pressure on your shoulders.

There are two main grips to use when holding the paddle; the conventional handle grip or the “choke” grip.

Holding the handle is used for normal paddling to use the full length of the paddle in every stroke. The conventional grip is great for endurance as you use less energy. This grip is used for long distance paddles.

The choke grip is used for shorter cadence strokes at a faster speed. This grip is used for sprinting.
